FinEdge NRI Investor Study 2025
Investing in India from abroad is usually described in terms of paperwork and product access. This study looks at something else: what NRI investors are actually building towards in India, how long they stay with it, and what keeping that going across time zones really involves.

Finding 01
NRI money in India is mostly funding two long-dated family goals
Across 1,932 recorded goals, children’s education and Retirement together account for 56%. That is a very different picture from the one implied by opportunistic, market-timing coverage of NRI investing. These are commitments with dates attached, not allocations chasing a view on India — which is what goal-based investing is designed to hold together.
Finding 02
These investors stay invested for years, not market cycles
85% of the NRI investors in this base have been invested with FinEdge for three years or more, 77% for five years or more and 65% for seven years or more. These are investment tenures — how long people have actually stayed invested — not the horizons written into their goals. Distance from India does not appear to shorten how long these investors stay with a plan, and staying invested is where most of the difference in long-term outcomes is created rather than lost, as covered in investing best practices.

Finding 03
Most of the support required is operational, not advisory
Of 2,879 recorded service requests, 72% concerned essentials and KYC — the administrative reality of holding Indian investments from another country. This is the part of cross-border investing that quietly decides whether a plan continues, and it is rarely the part that gets written about.
| Type of request | Requests | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Essentials and KYC | 2,072 | 72% |
| Transaction support | 491 | 17% |
| Personal details | 143 | 5% |
| Tax and FATCA | 116 | 4% |
| Nominee | 57 | 2% |
| Total recorded requests | 2,879 | 100% |
| Measure | Average per investor |
|---|---|
| Virtual meetings held each year | 5.4 |
| Average meeting length | 32 minutes |
| Portfolio reviews each year | 1.9 |
Reviewing a plan regularly is what keeps a long-dated goal honest as income, currency and family circumstances change — the same discipline behind a portfolio review.
In investors’ own words
“While for the first 6 yrs I had been in India and experienced prompt responses all the time but last one year that I have been working from Bangkok has been even better. Long distance never seemed any barrier at all. Infact I was more than happy with speed of the responses and quality of the conversations. My special word for my Financial Advisor Ms Deepika. She has been extremely professional and has fine sense of financial acumen to make all my investments choices very good. Way to go for both Deepika and FinEdge.”
