One Goal Led to the Next, Without Losing Sight of the Plan

For more than 12 years, Anand T S Ramakrishnan has been investing with FinEdge around a series of goals closely connected to his family's future.

What began with planning for his daughter Gourikripa's graduation gradually moved towards her post-graduation, her marriage and Anand's own retirement. As one requirement was managed, he did not treat that as a reason to abandon the structure he had built. He looked ahead to what the money needed to achieve next.

That continuity has become an important part of his investing journey.

Anand prefers to understand the reasoning behind a decision before acting on it. Rather than making frequent changes to his investments, he discusses decisions with his Investment Manager, considers how they fit his goals and then stays focused on the plan.

When One Goal Makes Way for the Next

Anand's initial priority was planning for Gourikripa's graduation. Once he was able to manage that requirement, his attention shifted to the next stage of her education rather than to an unrelated investment objective.

The focus moved towards her post-graduation, followed by planning for her marriage and Anand's own retirement.

These are different goals, but for Anand they form part of one continuing picture of his family's future. As circumstances have changed, the plan has evolved with them.

Along the way, Anand also achieved another important milestone — purchasing his own home in Kochi using funds from his investments. It was another meaningful goal realised as part of his investing journey.

He has also generally avoided unnecessary withdrawals and frequent changes to his investments. When a decision needs to be made, he prefers to understand its purpose and how it affects the goals he is working towards.

Building on the Plan as Financial Capacity Grows

Another important part of Anand's journey has been increasing his investments when his finances allow.

Rather than assuming that the amount he started with should remain unchanged indefinitely, he has regularly considered step-ups as his financial capacity has grown. Even relatively small increases, sustained over time, can strengthen the amount being built towards a long-term goal.

When additional money becomes available, Anand also makes occasional lump-sum investments. He sees these as an opportunity to strengthen the plan already in place rather than as a reason to pursue a completely different investment strategy.

Equally important is the way he approaches investment decisions. Anand values a thorough explanation of the reasoning behind them. His confidence in the strategy is therefore not passive; understanding why a decision is being made helps him remain committed to it.

Today, Gourikripa's post-graduation remains the immediate priority, with her marriage and Anand's retirement forming the longer-term picture.

Anand's journey is a reminder that a long-term investing plan does not have to start again every time life moves forward. Goals can change, financial capacity can grow and priorities can evolve while the underlying discipline of investing towards what matters can remain intact.
